Ontario Conservation Officer talks safety advice for turkey hunting

Drew Pegrum says one way to stay safe while hunting turkeys this spring is to put your back to a tree stump or rock that’s wider than your shoulders and taller than your head.

Pegrum is a Conservation Officer with Ontario Fish and Wildlife. With the spring wild turkey season starting next week, the organization is putting out some safety advice for hunters.

“This provides a shot-proof barrier covering your entire back,” he explains, “with a view of 180 degrees to your front.”

Pegrum also says you should be careful to never carry anything red, white, blue or black, since those colors all show up on turkeys and could get you mistaken for one.

He adds you should also avoid waving your hands or making sudden movements if you see other hunters approaching you.

“Sudden movement could be mistaken for a turkey flushing in the brush,” he explains. “Whistle or speak out in a normal voice.”

Spring wild turkey season begins Tuesday, April 25th. You can learn more on the provincial government’s website.
