Health Unit: one beach in Leeds-Grenville unsafe for swimming

Merrickville Beach has been removed from the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit’s list of “unsafe” beaches for swimming.

The organization’s latest results from its summer water testing program have been released.

Sand Lake Park Beach in Rideau Lakes is now the only beach in the Leeds-Grenville area listed as unsafe, alongside two others in Lanark County.

The monitoring program tests water samples weekly for E. coli bacteria, which can give swimmers ear, eye and throat infections when they’re exposed to high concentrations of it.

Beaches with too much of the bacteria to safely swim in are added to an online list, and signs are posted warning people to avoid swimming there.

Merrickville Beach was deemed “unsafe” in July, and stayed on the list for three weeks.

The test results are posted every Friday morning to the Health Unit’s website and social media pages.
