Health Unit lists six beaches as unsafe for swimming this weekend

Staff members at the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit say you’ll want to avoid swimming at several local beaches right now.

According to the organization, six different beaches in the region have unsafe amounts of e. coli bacteria in them.

The Health Unit tests water samples from local beaches every week for the bacteria, which can cause eye, ear and throat infections if you’re exposed to high concentrations of it.

Merrickville Beach, Almonte Beach, Riverside Beach in Carleton Place, and the beaches in Lyn Valley Park, Kendrick’s Park and Lower Beverly Lake Park are all unsafe this week.

Signs have been posted at all six locations urging swimmers to go elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Kelly’s Beach in Prescott and Sand Lake Beach in Westport are both safe again after being on last week’s list.

The Health Unit will be posting updated testing results every Friday until the end of August.
