Edwardsburgh-Cardinal Encouraging Organ Donations, Marks April 7th As “Green Shirt Day”

Edwardsburgh-Cardinal is looking to help raise awareness for organ donations as part of a national campaign.

Earlier this week, council heard a presentation from local teen Ethan Bos, who spoke about the story of Logan Boulet, a hockey player who was one of 16 people who died during the tragic Humboldt Broncos bus crash in 2018.

Bos highlighted how Boulet’s death brought much needed awareness to the need for organ donations in Canada.

Mayor Pat Sayeau says following the presentation, they decided to make the day official at the local level.

“It was an impressive PowerPoint presentation on the number of people who benefited from Logan’s organs,” Sayeau said. “Ethan came here with an objective to declare it Green Shirt Day on April 7th, and of course, we did that later on following the presentation.”

On April 7, 2018, following his death, Boulet’s organs were used to help save the lives of six individuals.

After it was revealed they had been donated, over 100,000 people registered to become organ donors.

The presentation pointed to the ‘Logan Boulet Effect’, which has seen 300,000 people sign their donor card in the last two years, since his death.

The presentation also highlighted that while 90 percent of Canadians but only 23 percent have registered to donate.

Bos pointed out that over 4,500 Canadians are waiting for an organ transplant, and one donor can save up to eight lives.
