Relay for Life organizers celebrate success at council meeting

The team at South Grenville District High School (SGDHS) collected nearly four times their fundraising goal at their annual Relay for Life event.

Held earlier this month, the relay saw teams of ten doing laps around SGDHS’ outdoor track for twelve hours, collecting donations for the Canadian Cancer Society.

$78,437 was collected at the event, smashing the team’s goal of $20,000. To celebrate breaking the school’s fundraising record at the event, three students shaved their heads.

The organizers were congratulated at this week’s council meeting by Mayor Gauri Shankar.

“A special thank-you to the whole team at South Grenville High School,” Shankar said, “that raised a huge amount of money. The most they’ve ever raised.”

The mayor, alongside the rest of council, presented the students and staff members with a special commemorative scroll to celebrate their accomplishment.
