Hogweed spotted in Augusta Township

Some dangerous invasive plants are starting to show up in local ditches and fields.

Augusta Township staff members are warning residents to keep an eye out for hogweed plants.

Like wild parsnips that have also been seen in the region, hogweed sap has a chemical that makes skin extremely sensitive to sunlight, which can cause serious burns.

Officials say skin that comes in contact with the sap will turn red and eventually blister before beginning to heal, and can stay discolored for up to two years.

You can identify the plant by its white flowers, growing in a pattern similar to an umbrella. We’ve attached a photo of a hogweed plant to this article.

If you spot one in Augusta, you’re being asked to contact the township’s Public Works department.
