Golf Tournament Aims To Better Community’s Youth

The Golf Initiative For Tomorrow tournament is hoping to teach youth in the area about life, and a little bit about golf too.

The tournament, in its fifth year now, aims to help raise money to fund kids in the G.I.F.T. golf program, where they learn about the game and life skills.

Founder Jim Decksheimer says he expects 35 to 40 kids to be registered in the program this summer. Participating youth receive a free membership to the Prescott Golf Club, all equipment needed to play the game, and weekly training sessions with the head golf professional at the course.

Decksheimer says he started the program back in 2012 after a rash of illegal activity from youth in the area. He believed he could use the game to get under privileged youth off the streets and onto the links where they could learn honesty, integrity, and comradery through the gentleman’s game.

He says everyone can learn a lot about life through the game of golf.

The tournament takes place May 21st at the Prescott Golf Club. Register in person at the Pro Shop or by calling 613-925-5370. The fee for current members is $50-$55, with non-member registration fees costing $85.
