LGL Medical Officer of Health offers some advice for dealing with heat wave

Dr. Linna Li says you should do everything you can to stay hydrated as temperatures rise in the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark region.

Dr. Li, the region’s Medical Officer of Health, has issued some advice for people struggling through the heat wave hitting our area.

Environment Canada issued a heat warning yesterday, with temperatures in the low thirties and humidex values in the low forties expected throughout the week.

“Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel very thirsty,” Li says. “Remember to take sips often and not to guzzle your drink.”

Li also adds that foods like watermelons, grapes and oranges, that contain a lot of water, can help you stay hydrated, and that you should avoid drinks that have a lot of caffeine like coffee or tea.

She also says you should try to avoid going outside and spend as much time as you can in the shade if you have to.

“Wear loose fitting, light clothing and a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors,” she adds.

If you’re hot in your home, Li says you should keep your lights off or dim, close the windows and cover them with drapes, and periodically take cold showers or use cold, wet towels to cool off.

You can find a more detailed breakdown of Li’s advice on the Health Unit’s website.
