School Bus Safety Week underway

Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario (STEO) is promoting the importance of school bus safety. School Bus Safety Week starts today and runs until Friday.

STEO serves the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) and Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB), transporting around 33,000 students daily.

Janet Murray, STEO General Manager/CAO, says it takes a village to keep students safe. She noted STEO needs the support of all motorists while buses perform their daily routes. Murray explained when the bus is displaying its flashing lights and stop sign arm, drivers need to stop in both directions for students getting on and off the bus.

Murray says it’s important for people to pay attention while behind the wheel. She explained people pass stopped school buses all the time and the consequences could be tragic.

Murray noted Wednesday is School Bus Driver Appreciation Day. She asks that people take a moment to thank a bus driver for the important work they do.
