Applications still open for Habitat build in Cardinal

There’s still time to apply for the Habitat for Humanity Thousand Islands build in Cardinal. The deadline has been extended to the end of the month.

Habitat is building two homes this year – one in Prescott and one on Dundas Street in Cardinal.

Vice Chair Martin Van Andel explained the original plan was to build two homes in Prescott, but that changed due to the cost of bringing town services to the lot on Boundary Street. He says the extension is to ensure no one gets left out. Van Andel noted Habitat has about a dozen applicants so far, between the two builds.

Habitat offers a zero down, zero percent mortgage. Volunteering with Habitat, known as sweat equity, is considered the down payment and the mortgage is geared towards your income.

Van Andel says the goal is to get shovels in the ground by the end of the month.
