Nationview Public School Progress Update
Administration from Nationview Public School were in front of the Upper Canada District School Board Board of Trustees last week for an update on the school’s progress.
Principle Karen Bryan told the board they were boosting learning in both math and literacy, while enhancing the wellness of all their students. Bryan says their teachers are using strategies called “high yield” or “high impact” to improve student’s writing skills. Some of the focuses of these strategies are on success criteria, learning goals and descriptive feedback.
Samples of student writings are also being looked at to help them plan future teaching strategies. Bryan noted that children in grades 1 to 3 who need extra attention are being put in special groups. Teachers then focus on narrative and constructing a story using a “Beginning, Middle and End” format.
Bryan says the school is also working to improve general student wellness through unique recess activities, like cross-country skiing. Students have also had the chance to take part in the Roots of Empathy and Zones of Regulation programs.
