Planning being done on a local archaeological society

Some local people are hoping that an archeological society can be created in the region to identify, register and preserve our archaeological heritage.

Bishop’s Mills resident Michael Whittaker says the proposed formation of a local chapter of the Ontario Archaeological Society would be an important addition to the area. He says the chapter should extend to the St. Lawrence River and would help prevent further loss and destruction of actual and potential First Nation and colonial sites.

Whittaker says some of those sites have been lost due to roads, housing and farming and says any structures left over by early settlers are worthy of identification and investigation.

Whittaker points out that municipalities like Brockville have lengthy sections of official plans dedicated to heritage and cultural resources, including archaeology but smaller communities don’t always have the resources.

Whittaker says the plan is to hold an organizational meeting early next year. If you’re interested in getting involved, contact Whittaker at 613-258-0477 or email [email protected].
