Edwardsburgh Cardinal Township officials say removing eight trees along the waterfront was necessary because of safety.
In a post on Facebook, the township says a detailed inspection by certified arborists revealed that the trees were in serious structural decline.
They say the assessment identified large cavities and internal decay, weak and compromised branch structures, limbs at high risk of breaking and increased likelihood of tree failure.
The decision, they add, was made to remove them because they were located in a busy public area and the risk to residents and visitors was significant.
They add that they will be exploring replanting opportunities to maintain the beauty and health of our waterfront for years to come.
