Police: Motorists and cyclists need to work together to share the road

Police are reminding motorists that they share the road with cyclists and pedestrians.

They say drivers need to leave at least one metre of space when passing a cyclist, check mirrors and blind spots before turning or opening their vehicle door and be patient and wait until it is safe to pass.

It’s also important to watch for cyclists at intersections, driveways, and school zones.

Cyclists must obey all traffic signs and signals with bicycles considered vehicles under Ontario law.

They should also ride in the same direction as traffic and use proper lights and reflectors when riding at night.

Police say safety is a shared responsibility and a little patience, courtesy, and attention can prevent a serious collision.
