Prescott Council says no to currently proposed high-speed rail project

Prescott Town Council wants changes made to a proposed high-speed rail project that would link Toronto to Quebec City.

At their regular meeting on Monday night, council voted to send a letter of support against the Alto high-speed rail project to provincial officials while also asking them to look at changing its route to stay along the current rail system and not run across farmland.

The proposed route would travel along the Highway 401 corridor around South Frontenac and the Kingston region.

Prescott Mayor Gauri Shankar tells Moose FM that if enough letters are sent to the province by municipalities it may cause them to pause on their plans.

“I kind of shrug a little bit that they don’t really care what we say but they may care if they get 200 of them. Death by a thousand little cuts.”

Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau first announced the project in February, 2025 with a design phase expected to last four to five years.
