Sportsmanship, fellowship and giving back to the community.
Those are the three pillars behind the Brockville Magedoma Old Timers Hockey Team, a squad made up of players ages 60 to 88, who are preparing to host their annual recreational hockeyfest.
It’s the fourth year for the event usually held in Brockville but it was moved to Prescott this year because of renovations.
Eight teams are scheduled to hit the ice, including one from Rochester New York.
The tournament takes place Tuesday and Wednesday at the Alaine Chartrand Community Centre and all money raised goes to the Weekender Program For Students, a volunteer-run initiative providing nutritious food bags to more than 380 local students facing food insecurity from junior kindergarten to Grade 12.
Peter Verhoeven is with the Brockville Magedoma Old Timers Hockey Team and he tells Moose FM it was important for them to give back.
“You should never have kids of any age going without food so that was an easy choice for us.”
Verhoeven adds that everyone is invited to come out and watch the games.
