If the CRA calls asking for your personal information, hang up the phone.
That’s the message from the OPP after receiving more reports of the CRA scam. Constable Suzanne Runicman with the Grenville Detachment says there are some things the CRA will never ask for.
Runciman says in many situations the fraudsters don’t actually know your name and they’re just phishing for information. The OPP say a new twist involves a clear, pre-recorded voice mail being left that impersonates the CRA. Runciman says if you’re contacted just hang up or delete the message. She adds there are ways to check.
The OPP ask anyone who may have been a victim to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or Crime Stoppers.
