Air Canada strike forces local resident to stay in Calgary

The impacts of the strike by Air Canada flight attendants is being felt here at home.

Kemptville resident Tanya McKechnie is a frequent flyer because of her career and she says she flew to Calgary on Air Canada on Monday, Aug. 11 with her return flight booked for last Friday.

McKechnie says she was waiting by the gate to come home when she received a text from the airline saying that her flight had been canceled and that they would check other airlines to see if they could find an alternate flight.

She says she received another text shortly after saying no other flights could be found and to visit the Air Canada website for information on a refund, something she says she’s been advised not to do because it could cause her to miss out on other costs she’d had to pay to remain in Calgary longer than expected.

McKechnie tells Moose FM that she’s been able to book a flight home on her own dime on WestJet but the entire situation is one she wont soon forget.

“It’s kind of shaken my confidence in the airline industry in general. It seems to be at any time that they can go on strike, no matter what the airline is, and everyone is high and dry.”

McKechnie adds she had to miss her son’s first football game of the season on Saturday because of the strike, something she was really looking forward to.
