You’re being asked to take a few steps before your first spring campfire.
Augusta Fire Rescue says all of the dead grass, brush, and fallen leaves that were buried under the snow all winter are now exposed and as the sun warms things up, the old vegetation dries out incredibly fast.
They say it only takes a single stray spark or a sudden gust of wind for a small yard fire to quickly escape and turn into a massive, fast-moving brush fire.
Before you burn, you’re asked to keep an eye on the weather and check the local wind speeds and the current fire danger ratings before lighting a fire.
You’re also asked to stay alert and prepared and get your burn permit.
