This week is all about rail safety in Edwardsburgh Cardinal.
The township has officially proclaimed Sept. 15 to Sept. 21 as Rail Safety Week and say that, each year, it reminds us of the importance of staying safe near trains and railways.
In Canada, 232 crossing and trespassing incidents were reported in 2022, resulting in 66 fatalities and 43 serious injuries that could have been prevented.
With support from the Canadian National Railway and Operation Lifesaver, officials say this week raises awareness about the dangers of trespassing on railway property and not obeying signs and signals at crossings.
By staying alert, looking and listening, and following traffic laws, they say we can all help reduce tragic incidents and save lives.
