Environment Canada Senior Climatologist David Phillips says the rain some areas are seeing is a tease.
While some rain fell on Wednesday across eastern Ontario, Phillips says it’s a move in the right direction but it’s only enough moisture to keep the dust down.
Phillips tells Moose FM that from June until now, our area has seen around half of the precipitation it normally would at this time of the year and he adds the last four weeks have been even drier with only ten per cent of the normal rainfall expected.
He says during that time frame we have seen thirteen days where the temperature was above 30 degrees Celsius.
“That’s what we’ve lacked this summer is a change of weather. It’s just been too hot, too dry, too smoky at times for too long.”
While we won’t get the 100 millimetres of rain we need to break even, Phillips says Tropical Storm Erin, currently taking shape over the Atlantic Ocean, will mix up the atmosphere next week which could lead to some rain and for the high pressure areas currently over us to be kicked out.
