Driving safe during back to school

The OPP are reminding drivers they need to be extra cautious now that children are returning to school.

This is a busy time on the roads with school buses returning and many older students driving themselves to class for the first time. With all the distractions on the road today it’s important drivers slow down and be aware of their surroundings. There are many things drivers only really need to watch for during the school year.

The OPP are using this opportunity to remind drivers that when they see a stopped school bus with its overhead red signal flashing they must stop before they reach the bus and not proceed until the bus starts moving or turns off flashing signal lights. This is the law under Section 175(11) of the Highway Traffic Act and the minimum fine for failure to stop is $400.

Always slowdown in school zones and be extra cautious of children at play. The OPP suggest motorists watch for Community Safety Zones. The speed limits are reduced, and fines increased, in these zones. They clearly marked with road signs and often found near schools. The OPP say the public can expect to see increased police presence but drivers should adjust their driving and pay attention for the safety of everyone, not just because they are worried about being charged.

If you see someone driving recklessly, or believe a driver is impaired, pull over when safe and report the vehicle to police by calling 9-1-1.
