Delays in Morrisburg Arena construction

It is going to be a little harder than usual to find ice in South Dundas during September.

The Morrisburg Arena will not be ready for skaters until late in October due to construction delays. Ben Macpherson, the Director of Recreation and Facilities with the Municipality of South Dundas, says construction is two-thirds of the way completed but the ice-in date is October 22nd. The delay in construction was reportedly caused by corner cutting the last time the foundation was replaced. Contractors working on the project had to remove a slab of concrete before they could start the scheduled upgrades.

The renovations were put in motion in May because the rink’s concrete slab was beginning to show signs of breaking down. Improvements being made to the arena include the concrete slab being removed and replaced, replacing the boards and glass and re-pouring the concrete skirt that runs around the rink so that it is more level and less of a tripping hazard.

Groups that normally use the rink were informed of the delay and made alternate arrangements. Macpherson says anyone looking for ice will have to contact other municipalities before the anticipated October completion date.
