The Grenville County OPP is reminding everyone to check ice conditions before heading out onto frozen waters this season.
The OPP says that clear blue ice is the strongest while white or opaque ice is much weaker.
Ice thickness should be checked in multiple places before stepping out, with 10 centimetres of thickness the minimum for ice fishing. Other activities such as snowmobiling requires at least 20 centimetres of clear blue ice.
Police also advise outdoorsmen to wear a flotation device and carry an ice pick if they are heading out onto the ice.
