Prescott Council to appoint member to fill vacant seat

Prescott Town Council will soon have a new member.

Following the passing of Coun. Ruth Lockett at the end of March, council declared her seat vacant and asked staff to bring forward options on how to move forward.

At their regular meeting on Tuesday night, council voted to have staff create a by-law to appoint Ray Young, the next place finisher in the 2022 municipal election, who garnered 551 votes.

Clerk Chloe Preston will contact Young to confirm his eligibility still remains and that he consents to the office but, unofficially, council heard at the meeting that both are indeed the case.

Young served as a councilor for over 15 years before falling just short of being reelected in 2022.

He tells Moose FM that he was a friend of Lockett’s and while he’s joining under terrible circumstances he’s excited to build on the momentum that council has been building.

“I’m very happy to go back and see the fulfillment of some of the ideas that were put into effect by previous councils and by this council.”

Council will vote on the appointment by-law at their next regular meeting.
