Province investing $50,000 for CCTV systems in Prescott

Town of Prescott staff is preparing to partner with the OPP to bring security cameras to high-crime regions in town.

According to a report to council, staff is preparing a “request for proposal” to collaborate with the Grenville County OPP detachment for a closed-circuit television (CCTV) project.

The report says Prescott has averaged 184 violent crimes like assault per year between the start of 2020 and end of 2022, and it’s expected the new CCTV system to reduce the rate of violent crimes.

The news comes after the detachment received a $50,000 grant from the Ontario government to expand security camera systems in the region.

According to the report, the total budget for the project will come out to $100,000, with the remaining money already set aside from the town’s Fiscal Policy reserve.
