An orange “Every Child Matters” flag is flying in Prescott this weekend.
At a Friday morning ceremony, Mayor Gauri Shankar and the rest of Prescott’s council raised the flag to commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
“This day is an opportunity to honour the lost children and survivors of residential schools, and their families and communities,” explained Shankar at the ceremony. “On Saturday, September 30th, people across Canada will wear orange shirts to remember the children who were taken from their families to residential schools.”
The statutory holiday was first observed in 2021. Shankar encouraged residents to listen to the stories of local Indigenous People to mark the occasion.
“Only by knowing about the crimes committed against Indigenous Peoples can we move forward together as a nation,” he said.
