Increased funding for Senior Community Grant

The Ontario Government is expanding the Seniors Community Grant program.

Earlier this week Minister of Senior Affairs Dipika Damerla announced the province would start accepting applications for innovative projects designed to help seniors live more healthy and active lives. Service Coordinator with Community and Primary Health Care Maria Millward says it is important for seniors to stay active because anyone that feels isolated is at a risk for depression. She adds that the most important thing is keeping seniors living independently for as long as it is safe for them to do so.

Up to five million dollars will be available to fund this round of projects. Originally grants ranged from $1,000 to $12,000 but applicants now have the option to apply for a $100,000 grant. This new grant is for projects that are larger in scope with the chance to leverage partnership and benefit more seniors over an extended period.

The program is in its fifth year and, according to the Ontario government, has supported more than 1,300 community based projects that helped around 435,000 seniors across the province.
