Shoppers Drug Mart fundraiser proceeds going to heart health

The month long Growing Women’s Health campaign is on at Shopper’s Drug Mart.

Each year local Shoppers Drug Marts choose a local cause that will raise awareness about a women’s health issue. The Brockville and Prescott Shoppers will be focusing on heart disease, which is the number one cause of death of women over 55 in Canada. Shoppers’ customers over the next month can raise money, and awareness, by purchasing paper cut outs of a leaf for $1, butterfly for $5, apple for $10 or bird for $50.

According to representatives with Brockville General Hospital 100 percent of the funds raised during this year’s campaign will go towards their Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Program (BCP). The BCP is designed to reduce the risk of future heart disease by providing patients with education after they have suffered a heart attack, had bypass surgery, stents or some other intervention. Once risk factors are identified BCP staff use lifestyle intervention to reduce these risks. A few methods they use include twice weekly exercise sessions, nutrition presentation and smoking cessation.
