CRA Scam resurfacing in Leeds-Grenville

Reports are resurfacing in the area about the return of a Canadian Revenue Agency scam.

The Leeds OPP Detachment says they received a call from a citizen on Wednesday who said someone called them claiming to be with the CRA. The citizen said they were asked for personal information, including their social insurance number.

Police want to remind the public that this is an ongoing scam and that the CRA never threaten arrest or call the police. They also do not ask for payment through prepaid credit cards or gift cards. The OPP says that if you receive a call you think is a scam do not take immediate action, hang up and verify the information with someone you trust and verify the status of your account by contacting the CRA directly.

To report a scam call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. If you are the victim of a scam that saw you provide personal information or money you can report it to the OPP non-emergency line at 1-888-310-1122.
