September is Hunger Awareness Month

September is Hunger Awareness Month across Canada and the South Grenville Food Bank are hard at work serving the community.

Hunger Awareness Month is a nationwide campaign that started in 2006 and focuses on getting the public involved with the issue of hunger. It also provides local food banks a chance to educate the public about common misconceptions that surround food bank use, like the idea only the homeless use their services. Bonnie Pidgeon Cougler says some other misconceptions include the fact that people get enough food to feed their family for an entire month.

At the South Grenville Food Bank food is given out based on a point system, with each food being given a point value and each customer being held to total number of points. Pidgeon Cougler says they can actually tailor food packages based on the age of customers or their dietary restrictions. They operate two locations outside of Prescott, one in Cardinal and one in Spencerville. Cougler adds that around 40 per cent of their client base is actually children under the age of 18.

Food given out by the food bank comes from a number of different sources but Pidgeon Cougler stresses that the community itself is the biggest provider. As a part of the Ontario Association of Food Banks they are given food donated by major manufactures. These products may be close to expiration, over runs or damaged packages but they always meet the food code. The South Grenville Food Bank also purchases food throughout the year with money received during food drives.
If you’d like to volunteer with the food bank you can call them at 613-925-2444 extension 3.
