Tomorrow night Hardy Park will be filled with demonstrators supporting a woman’s rights to feel safe at night.
Brockville’s installment of the global Take Back the Night initiative will start at 5:30pm and run until around 8:30pm. Take Back the Night rallies date back to the 1970s but they didn’t reach their peak internationally until the early 2000s. The rallies are a form of protest against sexual, relationship and domestic violence. They celebrate the right of people to be where they want, when they want, how they want in a world without violence.
The Brockville event will be different from many of the rest because it was organized to be a family friendly affair. There will be Glow-in-the-Dark Zumba put on by Meredith Armstrong, live music performed by Dan Schaafsma, an activity zone for kids with free barbeque, cotton candy and popcorn, while supplies last. The night will end with a march, as is customary with Take Back the Night events, to City Hall.
Event organizers suggest bringing something comfortable to sit on and a flashlight to help them light up the night.
