New program helps women enter skilled jobs

A new program focused on women working in skilled jobs is coming to Brockville.

The Employment + Education Center (EEC) have announced the Women in Trades Pre-Apprenticeship program is launching this month. The EEC say one of the ways to deal with an increasing need for qualified workers is training local people to work in local industries that have a need for skilled staff. The Women in Trades Pre-Apprenticeship program is designed to meet the needs of local workers so they become qualified in a number of fields.

Program participants must be female, between the ages of 15 to 30 and having a tough time finding work. Recruiting for the first group to take part in the program has started. Information sessions will be held at 105 Strowger Boulevard in Brockville on September 6th at 5:00pm, September 7th at 1:00pm and September 11th at 10:00am. The first group is scheduled to begin the in-class portion of the program on October 2nd and is focused on hospitality careers like cook, baker or butcher.

The in-class portion of the Women in Trades program will focus on the skills needed to find and keep employment in the hospitality sector. Some of the certifications the first program will earn include Smart Serve, Safe Food Handling, Customer Service Excellence and WHMIS. A few of the other topics covered include career advancement, job searching and workplace culture. Following the paid in-class portion there will be a 20 week work placement in an environment related to the participant’s career of choice.

Some of the programs that follow this are expected to focus on construction, welding, electrical and plumbing. For more information call program facilitator Jamie Pate at 613-498-2111 ext. 246 or email [email protected].
