Ontario Government announce Green Leaf Challenge

As part of Canada 150 celebrations the Ontario government are giving out seedpods.

Michael Gravelle, the Minister of Northern Development and Mines, announced yesterday that 15,000 Eastern White Pine pods would be distributed at events and schools across the province. The Ontario Government is using Canada’s 150th anniversary as a chance to encourage the public to plant tress so the province is a greener, cleaner place to live. The Eastern White Pine is the official tree of Ontario.

Officials for the Ontario Government say each year the province plants three million trees and this year they want Ontarians to match their target. The initiative is part of the Green Leaf Challenge and participants can register trees they plant, including but not limited to these eastern white pine pods, on an interactive map.

The pods were designed to assure a high degree of germination and seeds will be given out in biodegradable cups, complete with growing instructions. According to the Ontario government more than 22.5 million trees have been planted since 2007 and these trees created over 12,000 hectares of new forests.
