“Safety Without Borders” traffic initiative

Safety is always a top priority for the OPP but tomorrow they’re taking it beyond borders.

The OPP, East Region Traffic Teams, select detachments and marine units will be teaming up with the Surete du Québec, and polices services in New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, for the “Safety Without Borders” traffic safety initiative. “Safety Without Borders” is a high visibility traffic enforcement project occurring along Highway 401 from Gananoque to the Québec border, on Highway 416 and Highway 417 from the Québec border to Hawkesbury and along the waterways.

Anyone travelling over the border will find Canadian and American police services united in their efforts to protect motorists while making roads safer. The “Safety Without Borders” initiative is also designed to raise driver awareness about the importance of learning, and obeying, the laws when travelling in another country or province. During the project police will be conducting RIDE programs, traffic enforcement and marine patrols while focusing on offences they believe are most likely to result in serious or fatal collisions. Some of their target areas include impaired driving, aggressive driving, distracted driving and seatbelt use.

Officers say they will be looking for any moving violation that may put the driver or other vehicles at risk. Police want to remind the public to do their part, always drive responsibly and report any traffic violations that you see even if you’re the passenger.
