Today Wellington Elementary School celebrated Canada’s 150th anniversary with a ribbon cutting ceremony at their new garden.
Representatives of the Upper Canada District School Board say the garden commemorates the nation, local geography and the country’s Indigenous people. The school also took this opportunity to unveil a new Canadian flag plaque.
School board officials say the 15 by 30 foot design features a circular garden in the centre planted with a purple standard sand cherry and golden nugget barberry bordered by grey paving stone. Running the middle of the garden is a grey stone walkway that runs from east to west to represent the St. Lawrence River. Four smaller gardens border the landscaped area. The school board added they are planted with pinky winky hydrangeas to represent the four seasons of Canada. They also noted that in the coming weeks, coloured benches will also be installed in the garden in honour of a traditional Indigenous medicine wheel.
The ribbon cutting was the end to an exciting morning of celebration at Wellington. The festivities included a ceremony in the gym, student performances of Canadian themed music and a special video from Governor General David Johnston greeting the students.
