OPP Chief Superintendent speaks to media about police misconduct

Following recent arrests within the force, OPP East Region Chief Superintendent Daniel Redmond spoke to media about professionalism among police. He says the eighteen-month investigation that led to the arrest of three Leeds County constables for drug trafficking began with tips from the public and from other police officers.

When asked why police officers accused of criminal activity are suspended with pay, Redmond said they are bound by the Ontario Police Services Act. He added, however, that the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police is considering opening up that Act for further review.

On November 12th, Leeds County OPP Constable Jason Redmond (no relation to the Chief Superintendent) and Constable David Volgelsang were charged with drug trafficking and obstruction of justice, along with seven other members of the public. The arrests were part of an investigation known as “Project Arrowtown.”

On October 31st, Leeds County OPP Constable George Duke was arrested and charged with theft, drug possession and weapons charges.
