OPP conducts pilot project on body-worn cameras

OPP Commissioner Vince Hawkes has sent an open letter to the public, concerning the use of police cameras. The letter states after a pilot project in 2007, police decided they would not be using in-car cameras. More recently, the focus has moved to body cameras.

Similar to the challenges faced with car cameras, there are concerns beyond cost, including:  data storage and management, technological shortcomings, privacy concerns, and a lack of existing regulations and case law regarding their use. The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police will await the results of a pilot project on body cameras with the Toronto Police before deciding on the extent they will be used.
