Flyers Home Report: Prescott Snaps Eight Game Losing Streak

The Flyers got their win, but it wasn’t the kind of win everyone was expecting.

The home team kept the crown waiting, but opened the scoring at the 18:50 mark in the first period. Greg Heika, who was parked in front of the Renfrew net on a Flyers’ power play, deflected Shawn Sloan’s shot from the point past Timberwolves goaltender Jacob Drover to make it 1-0.

In fairness, Prescott deserved the lead, peppering the Renfrew net throughout the first 20 minutes.

The Flyers also got what they deserved next.

Prescott’s goal gave them fake confidence, coming out flat in the second. Just 30 seconds in they allowed Renfrew to break in twice. The first hit the post but Timberwolves forward Kurtis Keohane made no mistake on the second putting a double deke on Flyers goaltender Sam Limoges-Ring to even it at 1-1.

Prescott got a lucky bounce when the puck deflected off the boards and up over the back of the Renfrew net, where centre Brad Douesnard was able to swat it home.

Not a minute went by though before the Timberwolves brought it back to 2-2. Renfrew winger Nych Paquette walked right in to sling a low one into the bottom corner.

Prescott was persistent on the Renfrew goal though, with forward Joel Holtrop redirecting a blast from a tight angle into the top corner to inch the Flyers into a 3-2 lead.

It was like watching a game of ping-pong in the second period; back and forth, back and forth.

Renfrew scored on a power play, but as soon as the orange and black were back to full strength, Brad Douesnard picked up his second of the game and Prescott’s fourth to put them ahead 4-3.

The tug of war continued into the third.

Some great puck movement on the power play by Renfrew had the Prescott defensemen twisting and turning, only to end up finding the puck in the back of their net.

It was tough to tell who the league’s worst team was on the night, with both sides showing laziness on the back end.

Tensions boiled over with 6:48 left in the third when a line brawl broke out. That saw Kristopher Laushway and Devan Miller ejected from the rest of the game as well as two Renfrew players.

The score was settled at 4-4 as the game headed into overtime. Prescott took advantage of a Renfrew spearing penalty at the end of the 3rd and used the extra man to power home the game winner with Greg Heika throwing one in from a tight angle, giving Prescott the 5-4 win.

Head Coach Mark Armstrong praised his team for a well deserved two points, acknowledging the fact that it’s been a rough eight game stretch for the team.

“It doesn’t matter in this league if you’re the last place team. You win a couple, you’re right up there, you lose a couple and you’re right back down. Fortunate enough for us is that we’ve kind of stayed in that same spot during that slide we’ve had”.

The win snaps an eight game losing streak for Prescott and also hands Renfrew their eighth loss in a row.
