An investigation into a reported fractured right wrist suffered by a 30-year-old man in Kemptville has been terminated by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit.
SIU Deputy Director Stacey O’Brien says in a report published online that a man was apprehended on Apr. 9 and taken to the hospital by Grenville County OPP under the Mental Health Act.
His mother called police after he made comments about self-harm.
After remaining at the hospital for several hours without being assessed or treated, police say they were notified he left and as they attempted to return him to hospital, he walked away.
The report says as he walked he increased his pace to a jog and fell and was then transported to hospital and diagnosed with a fractured wrist.
O’Brien says video evidence places the officer at an estimated distance of 20–30 feet behind the man at the time of his fall. No other officers were nearby.
There was no evidence any officer made physical contact or contributed to his fall.
As a result, the investigation has been dropped.
The SIU investigates police interactions that may have resulted in death, serious injury, the discharge of a firearm and/or sexual assault.
