The Town of Prescott has invited residents, community members, and local organizations to attend the annual Pride flag raising ceremony on Monday.
“The town has been behind this for many years now and we do support Pride Month,” explained Mayor Gauri Shankar.
“I know we are a little late getting into it on the 15th, but we had our first meeting on the first, so we weren’t prepared yet.”
Shankar will deliver remarks, reflecting on the importance of fostering a welcoming and inclusive municipality where everyone feels valued, respected, and supported.
“It’s very important to council, staff, and the town that we acknowledge the progress made and reaffirm our dedication to providing a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for the 2SLGBTQ+ community. We are trying to do the best we can to make everyone feel welcome.”
There is no Pride organization in Prescott, something Shankar explained has led to the town taking the lead.
“It’s our own initiative. There’s no committee and no other force behind it.”
The town installed a Pride crosswalk five years ago, and while Shankar said there are some opposed to it and the flag, it is an important initiative.
“The majority of people understand that by being inclusive and welcoming, we are going to help those who are struggling with the environment. If we can help one person, it’s well worth it.”
The event takes place at 5 p.m. at the town hall. Light refreshments will be available following the ceremony, providing an opportunity to gather and celebrate.
