The union representing educational workers at the Upper Canada District School Board says it’s strongly condemning a board decision to move ahead with significant staffing cuts.
CUPE 5678 and the Ontario School Board Council of Unions says the cuts to 31 full-time equivalent positions, including early childhood educators and instructional assistants, come despite a crisis in understaffing and growing student needs across the board.
Both are calling on the province to properly fund education and on the UCDSB to immediately reverse the cuts.
In a statement to the Vista Radio Newsroom, UCDSB Executive Superintendent Chris Boulay counters that “each spring the board is required to align staffing with budgetary constraints and projected enrolments.”
He says these decisions are made within the framework of applicable legislation and their collective agreements, which establish clear processes to ensure fairness and consistency.
Boulay goes on to say that “while the reduction of positions is occurring within the UCDSB for the 2026-27 school year, the board remains committed to supporting employees through this process and to minimizing impacts wherever possible.”
