Local athlete reflects on 2026 Winter Olympics

Jay Dearborn says he won’t fully understand what his experience at the 2026 Winter Olympics truly means until he’s reflecting on it year’s from now.

The Yarker Ontario native and former Canadian Football League player was part of the two-man and four-man bobsled team in Italy after previously competing for Canada at the 2022 Winter Olympics in China.

Dearborn adds that the teams results, finishing out of the top three, weren’t what they wanted but he adds his team tried to make the best of it and attempted to have some fun.

“I was pretty down, I was pretty upset. You go to the Olympics hoping to perform at your best and I’m still trying to digest and reflect on what that meant to me for the two-man event and wgat we did.”

He says when he’s competing he tries to focus solely on how his team is doing and not letting the moment become overwhelming.

As for what comes next, Dearborn tells Moose FM he’s taking time to reflect on what course he will take but he adds that rising costs will play a large part in his decision.

“I don’t know how to do that without somebody, (or) a couple of people, from the area with the ability to support something like this stepping up.”

Looking back, Dearborn says this time around it was closer to what he feels the Olympic experience should be with friends and family on hand to cheer on his team which finished out of the top three.
