New U19 women’s football team looking for players

A new women’s football team in Kemptville is aiming to give participants the chance to find like-minded teammates and participate in the sport without being limited to the periphery due to barriers.

The Kemptville Jaguars is a new expansion team in the U19 Ontario Women’s Football League which will begin play this May.

Team officials say registration is now open and add that it’s a wonderful experience for women to try the sport for the first time with participants not required to have any prior playing experience.

The team will play six regular season games plus playoffs and the league is made up of 15 teams.

Head Coach John Parkes tells Moose FM that he’s excited about the role the team will play for girls in the community.

“This can be their game. Just as much as the men have been playing it for decades upon decades now, if we want the sport of football to grow the best way to do it is to have everyone involved.”

A free try football night is taking place this Friday at Kemptville Campus from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Participants can learn about everything that’s involved in the sport and even try on the equipment.

Kemptville Minor Football Club President Chelsey-Ann Dunlop tells Moose FM that she’s excited about the development of the sport.

“It’s creating a pathway for young women to compete at a high level without having to leave their community. It positions Kemptville as a leader in growing opportunities for women in football across the region.”

Players from across the region are being invited to be a part of the team, with no geographical restrictions in place.
