Driver’s are being reminded that having proper winter tires is essential to safe driving.
The advice from police follows a driver being charged with having improper tires in a collision in the westbound lanes of Highway 401 in Kingston on Tuesday.
While winter tires are not mandatory, East Region OPP say the the Highway Traffic Act and related regulations prohibit driving with improper tires.
That includes those with worn treads below the legal limit, exposed cords, or significant cuts, bulges, or knots.
The minimum tread depth for most passenger vehicles is 1.5 millimeters.
