Police issue warning over online investment frauds

Police are warning you about a growing trend in online investment frauds.

East Region OPP say victims are being contacted through social media platforms by individuals pretending to be legitimate financial investors or advisors.

They say the fraudsters often create convincing profiles and act friendly before offering investment opportunities that promise high returns. Victims are persuaded to transfer money to fraudulent accounts and, in many cases, the money is unrecoverable.

You’re reminded to be cautious of unsolicited investment offers, especially on social media, and to verify the identity and credentials of anyone offering financial advice.

You should report suspicious activity to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
