We are waiting to learn more about the death of an Ottawa man at a Mallorytown campground over the weekend.
Leeds County OPP Cst. Joey Mason tells Moose FM that staff at the campground called police just after 6 a.m. Sunday after they were approached by the man’s 10-year-old daughter.
Mason says first responders discovered the man, who was in his forties, deceased in a tent that had been crushed by a large tree that had fallen with a nearby vehicle also heavily damaged.
He says the girl suffered a serious but non-life-threatening head injury and she is now in the care of her family.
Mason tells Moose FM that police will be able to provide more details once a post mortem examination is completed.
“Police have taken the scene, we’ve analyzed the scene, and now it’s really just a matter of waiting to see what the post mortem will say about this gentleman’s death, confirming whether or not the tree was actually the reason.”
While more needs to be learned, Mason says a storm swept through the area on Saturday night and Environment Canada issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning.
He says it’s always important to follow the guidance of a weather agency and to find the safest area possible during a storm.
