Cost of garbage bag tags in Prescott going up as of Canada Day

Garbage bag tags in Prescott will soon cost you a little more.

Under new regulations, recycling in Ontario is shifting from a municipal responsibility to a provincial one with the change coming into effect next month.

Prescott Mayor Gauri Shankar tells Moose FM that Limerick Environmental Services Ltd., who formerly looked after both waste and recycling collection in the town, told them that with the loss of the recycling contract they’d need to raise prices to stay in business.

With their contract increasing to just over $40,000 more a year, which works out to a $5.00 increase per household pickup, council voted this week to raise the price of bag tags to $2.25 from $2 effective July 1 to offset half of the extra amount.

The rest will be taken from municipal reserves with no impact on taxes.
