There continues to be fewer travelers making the trek into the United States from our region.
Data released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection shows the number of trips from Prescott into Ogdensburg New York fell by 7,235 in May compared to the same month in 2024.
It was part of an overall drop of over 29,000 into the United States from the three border crossings in eastern Ontario.
Prescott Mayor Gauri Shankar tells Moose FM that the decline in visitors is being seen on both sides of the border.
“You can read the writing on the wall just from talking to people every day. They mention that they are not going over and even on our side we’re not seeing the American tourism that we would normally see.”
The drop in visitors was one of the reasons behind a meeting between Mayor Shankar and Ogdensburg Mayor Michael Tooley earlier this month.
Shankar says the two spoke again earlier this week and they are setting up a meeting between their respective councils in the near future.
