Police call the number of motorcyclist deaths on Ontario Provincial Police patrolled roads last year very shocking.
Grenville County OPP Constable Dave Holmes says there were 57 deaths in 2024, the highest number of fatalities in two decades, and he adds many were not the fault of the motorcyclist.
This is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Week in Ontario and Holmes says it serves as a reminder of how vulnerable motorcycles can be while out travelling.
He tells Moose FM that vehicle drives always need to be aware of what’s on the road around them.
“The motorcycle is going to be able to stop in an emergency more likely faster than a vehicle will, so if you’re not providing enough space for the driver in front of you the vehicle could be rear ending a motorcycle just by not having enough space.”
Holmes adds that it’s especially important to be aware of your surroundings when travelling at a high rate of speed.
